When a reflection is unclear, no longer reminiscent of the image it casts back, reality becomes abstracted. Remnants of dreamlike spaces, Tess Roby’s photographs present minute everyday occurrences that blur visual boundaries. A sense of stillness arises from her images, creating a realm where time is suspended and windows are often left open.
Roby is a Toronto-born, Montreal-based photographer and musician. Capturing traces of her travels, Roby abstracts the urban landscape and architecture of the cities she wanders in, finding sublimity in the commonplace and delicately revealing its beauty. Shot on 35mm film, her photographs exhibit the unmistakable grain of the medium and ethereally capture the passage of time, exposing and transforming unexpected subtleties through her lens.
